NATHAN FLETCHER--The Democratic Party Candidate for County Supervisor

The Republican Party controls the San Diego County Board of Supervisors—all five seats. And they will stop at nothing to keep their hold on power and elect Republican Bonnie Dumanis. This includes their all too transparent efforts to attack Nathan Fletcher with Democratic voters and promote Democratic candidates they think they can beat.

However, Democrats are not falling for their deception. That is why the Democratic Party of San Diego voted overwhelmingly to endorse Nathan Fletcher. This came on top of support from leaders like Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, Assemblymember Todd Gloria, Councilmember Chris Ward, Senator Chris Kehoe, former Councilmembers Donna Frye and Marti Emerald and many others who have all stepped forward to support Nathan Fletcher—the official Democratic Party candidate for Board of Supervisors.

Nathan Fletcher stated, “I started my elected career as a liberal Republican and over time have become a proud Democrat. With the emergence of the Tea Party and Donald Trump, the Republican Party has clearly changed, but so did I. As we go through life we have experiences and learn and grow. I am proud to be a Democrat and am committed to the principles that make the Democratic Party strong--equality, opportunity, justice. And I am proud of the overwhelming support from Democratic and progressive leaders in our effort to take back the board of supervisors and have a county government that works for all. The Republican Party can try any attempt they like, but Democrats aren’t being fooled by their deceptive tactics.”

Jessica Hayes, Chair of the Democratic Party said, “There is no doubt Nathan Fletcher is one of us. We fully believe in him and trust him to put our progressive values to work. Some of our strongest Democrats are people who started their lives as Republicans--Howard Dean, Elizabeth Warren, Joe Biden, even our last party chair Francine Busby and many others. They made the difficult choice to join our party and we embrace them with the same fervor we now embrace Nathan Fletcher. As Democrats, we believe in enlightenment, education and evolution. We have watched Nathan grow and no Republican efforts to deceive Democrats will sway our rock solid-support for him.”

Below you will find additional information the Republican’s don’t want Democratic voters to know:

FACT: NATHAN FLETCHER WAS NEVER A “CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN”

Nathan Fletcher was raised in Southern Arkansas, attended California Baptist University, then joined the Marine Corps.  Given his life experiences, it should surprise no one that he initially registered and became involved in the Republican Party. He even ran for the Assembly and served for 3 years as a Republican. But, from the beginning he was criticized by the GOP as being too progressive on nearly every Democratic core value: Equal Rights, Environmental Protection, Choice, Labor and Workers.  It was often noted that his voting record, as a Republican, was the most liberal of any other Republican and further left than the moderate Democrats.

Just look at what GOP leaders said about him then:

Steven Greenhut - Republican Thought Leader - June 2011.

"Republicans like Fletcher because he is a Marine, and Fletcher made references to this his military service as reason that he can handle the job of mayor. That’s great, but Fletcher is a non-reformer, big-government Republican who doesn’t value property rights, is allied with the unions, is opposed to meaningful reform of pensions and the bureaucracy and is no champion of the free-market." http://calwatchdog.com/2011/06/07/fletchers-sorry-pro-union-big-govt-record/

Former Republican State Assemblyman Steve Baldwin - July 2011.

"Finally, Assemblyman Fletcher was the ONLY Republican to vote for SB 48, the most pro-homosexual propaganda bill ever passed into law in this state.  It forces our schools to focus on homosexual “heroes” in our history texts.  It is designed to give “confused” children heroes than can identify with. This legislation will play a role in leading many children to this dark and immoral lifestyle. This is really shocking.  Even Republicans in far more liberal districts than Nathan’s district voted “NO” on it." http://sdrostra.com/?p=18784

Conservative groups gave him failing grades for his support of progressive issues:

“Conservative Scorecard Flunks Fletcher” story in San Diego Union Tribune, November 7, 2011.

The Republican Liberty Caucus: Rated Nathan the most liberal Republican member of the State Assembly

California Republican Assembly: Gave Nathan a failing grade for his support of reasonable restrictions on firearms, making it easier for welfare recipients to receive benefits and his support of LGBT issues.

FACT: NATHAN FLETCHER’S RECORD IN THE LEGISLATURE REFLECTED HIS GROWTH ON PROGRESSIVE ISSUES AND HIS EVENTUAL PARTY CHANGE TO DEMOCRATIC.

Nathan worked with Democrats, even as a Republican, to ensure there were leadership and enough votes on key progressive legislation.

2009 - 2012 Nathan Fletcher was the only Republican in either house to vote with Democrats 25 times, more than any other Republican Assemblyman or Senator. 45 times he was the only GOP vote for Democratic legislation in the State Assembly.

Nathan worked with Democrats to close a corporate tax loophole “The smart jobs-creation package unveiled last week by Gov. Jerry Brown and Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, R-San Diego, managed to get through the Assembly without a vote to spare… ” (UT Editorial Board, “Don’t Give Up On Jobs Proposal,” 9/13/11)

Nathan cast a critical vote in support of Homeowner Bill of Rights. This legislation forbids banks from starting the foreclosure process on a homeowner if the property is in a loan modification program and requires all banks to cease the practice of “robosigning,” where bank employees routinely signed foreclosure documents without actually reading them.

Nathan supported the Disclose Act.

A bill (finally passed this year) to give California voters more insight into the funding of political advertisements in the post-Citizens United era of unlimited spending by shadowy independent groups. Nathan Fletcher was the only Republican to support the legislation.

Nathan was the deciding vote for Farm Worker Safety Act of 2012.

This legislation held growers and labor contractors jointly liable if workers are not provided adequate shade and water.  Despite making sense, the bill failed to gain a majority vote with the Democrats on the Assembly floor, Nathan stood up for workers.

By his 4th year in the Assembly, Nathan Fletcher had a clear Progressive voting record, including 100% for EQCA & Planned Parenthood, very strong records on labor and the environment.

FACT: OUR DEMOCRATIC PARTY ASKED NATHAN FLETCHER TO JOIN US, MAKING THE CASE HE WAS ALREADY ONE OF US. HE DID AND HAS BEEN AN ACTIVE, CONSISTENT, PROGRESSIVE DEMOCRAT FOR YEARS NOW.

Not once, but twice Nathan Fletcher was asked by party leaders to join the Democratic Party. They laid out a case for why he shared our progressive values and belonged in the Democratic Party.

   Francine Busby Letter

Nathan has been a clear voice on Democratic initiatives, lending his voice and campaigning to stop anti-union ballot measures (including Prop 32), promoting education and taxing the rich (Prop 30 and its extension), raising the minimum wage in San Diego (Measure I) and fighting for our voice at the ballot box (Measures K&L.)

Nathan has donated to, raised money for and walked to elect Democratic candidates throughout the County and State, including (but not limited to): Georgette Gomez, Chris Ward, Barbara Bry, Olga Diaz, Kevin Beiser, Juan Vargas, Scott Peters, Mona Rios, Lorena Gonzalez, David Alvarez, Colin Parent, Sharon Quirk-Silva, Gavin Newsom and Jerry Brown.

Nathan was elected as a Hillary delegate to the National Convention (as the top vote recipient in the region.) He continues to serve on the board of OFA.

And that is why he is the officially endorsed candidate of the Democratic Party, San Diego Democrats for Equality, SEIU Local 221, Building and Construction Trades Council, Communication Workers, Carpenters, along with Democratic elected and former elected officials including: Gavin Newsom, Todd Gloria, Terrell Fletcher, Rafael Castellanos, Chris Ward, Jess Durfee, Francine Busby, Donna Frye, Kevin Beiser, All 5 SD Community College Trustees, Chris Kehoe.
