FLETCHER ANNOUCES SUPPORT FOR REDISTRICTING REFORM

San Diego, CA – Assembly Candidate Nathan Fletcher is pleased to join Governor Schwarzenegger in supporting Proposition 11, the Voters First Act.  Since the beginning of his campaign, Fletcher has supported Governor Schwarzenegger’s efforts to finally bring fairness and balance to the way California’s legislative districts are drawn.

Proposition 11 advocates the formation of an independent commission to re-draw district boundaries, rather than the current policy which provides incumbent politicians the opportunity to re-draw district boundaries. “Our current system allows elected officials to create their own districts and basically choose their own constituents.  This practice is not good for the people of California,” said Fletcher. “We need elected officials who can be held accountable by their constituents and that begins with creating more fairly drawn legislative districts.”

Under Proposition 11, district lines would be drawn by a politically balanced, independent, and diverse Citizens Redistricting Commission. This commission will focus on transparency and public accountability, while recognizing the importance of including communities in the same district and respecting California’s unique geography. “Ensuring that California has fair and competitive legislative districts will protect the integrity of California’s political process.  Proposition 11 will help accomplish that purpose,” said Fletcher.

Nathan Fletcher (R-San Diego) is running to represent the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the city of San Diego communities of Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Penasquitos, Scripps Ranch, Mira Mesa, University City, Carmel Valley and La Jolla along with the city of Poway and a portion of Escondido.
