North County Times Story on 75th Assembly District

Today the North County Times did a profile on our race.  Here are some excerpts from the story:

 

With three-term Republican Assemblyman George Plescia stepping down because of term limits, former Marine staff sergeant, businessman and fellow Republican Nathan Fletcher hopes to inherit the 75th District seat.

By most conventional measures ---- the district's Republican majority, Fletcher's successful fundraising and his long, energetic campaign ---- it appears the baton will pass to the 31-year-old, first-time candidate.

Fletcher announced his candidacy in February 2007, and his campaign has since raised almost $800,000, he said. His campaign is supported by a cadre of precinct walkers and people working the phones. He has been busy giving talks and hosting coffees at dozens of community meetings.

His has earned the endorsements of former Republican Govs. George Deukmejian and Pete Wilson and every member of the Escondido City Council.

"I think you convey how seriously you'll take the job in the Legislature by how seriously you campaign," Fletcher said.

The self-described lifelong Republican believes if he gets to Sacramento, one issue will define his work.

"The economy, the economy and the economy," he said.

Foremost, he said, California needs to find ways to attract, keep and expand business.

"We have such an amazing array of innovation, technology and entrepreneurship here, but we have a business climate and structure that are not conducive to these growing," he said.

From expensive building permits to limited tax credits for research and development to worker compensation costs to ports that aren't ready for the future, Fletcher said much needs to be changed to make sure businesses and jobs flourish in California.

But strengthening the state's economy is more than just a matter of business-friendly policies, he said.

"Education and the economy go hand in hand," he said. "Are we going to educate people who are going to be ready to go into the high-tech sector? Are we going to have a UC system that puts out the engineers and scientists we need?"

Fletcher first came to San Diego from his native Nevada for Marine boot camp in 1997 and has since been deployed to Iraq and the Horn of Africa as an active duty and reserve Marine. Between deployments, he worked for the California Republican Party in 2001 and 2002…
