Here are five things that caught my attention (sorry for delay in sending)!:
Dad of the Year: Lorena and I brought the “little boys” to DC with us this weekend and I had a chance to take Caleb as my date to a White House Holiday party. We went to JC Penny to get him a new suit and got all dressed up–he was so excited! Of course the President singled him out for an extended conversation and experience he will never forget. Everytime I get invited to the White House, I am reminded that I grew up in a working class family with no political connections. For all our challenges, it is a great county with great opportunities. And to be able to share this one with our youngest was a real treat.
Sweet Science loses an icon: Some of our era's most iconic boxing moments had Mills Lane as the referee. He died this week at age 85. While he is best known for being in the ring for the Mike Tyson biting episode his career spanned much more including more than 100 championship bouts. He was a Marine Corps veteran, former professional boxer and attorney and district attorney! RIP Mills Lane.
Pearl Harbor Remembrance: This week marked 81 years since the attack on Pearl Harbor that resulted in the loss of 2,403 American service members and civilians on December 7, 1941. We remember those service members and the survivors, like my friend Stu Hadley. We miss Stu, and we honor all those whose lives were impacted on that fateful day. #PearlHarborRemembranceDay
SD Trolleys Abroad: Did you know our San Diego trolleys go international? 10 years ago, MTS started a great tradition of sharing our decommissioned trolleys with folks in the Province of Mendoza, Argentina. I love Argentina and have had some great adventures climbing some of their highest mountains! We recently had the chance to celebrate this decade of partnership with our Argentinian friends. As Chair of MTS, I couldn’t be prouder of our global stewardship and I’m happy that there’s going to be millions of folks in Argentina who will have access to public transportation in a way they didn't have before, and we’re supporting our mutual goals of eco-friendly transportation solutions.
Antisemitism: I’m sad for my Jewish brother and sisters and disgusted that they are having to deal with rising antisemitism online, in popular media, and in our communities. I’ll never understand having hate in your heart for another person you don’t know based on their race, ethnicity, or religion. It’s not just Kayne West. The Jewish community feels under attack with rising incidents of hate, even as we are just a few years removed from the atrocities at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue and the Poway synagogue. This alarming rise in antisemitism speaks to a need for more education and more awareness about the Holocaust and the American Jewish experience. It’s really sad that we have to point out that praising Hitler and denying the Holocaust is vile.
