Accepting responsibility: This week, we had an emotional press conference with the family of Angel Zapata Hernandez. He died while in custody of MTS Public Safety Officers and it should not have happened. While we’ve seen many entities blame the victim or deflect responsibility, we took full accountability for what happened. We apologized, changed personnel, made substantive policy changes, compensated the family, and pledged ourselves to the difficult work of rebuilding trust.
COVID: We continue to lead the way in COVID response—record number of vaccines administered, low case rates and responsible reopening. San Diego County continues to be the leader in vaccination distribution in California, we are more than 66% of the way towards our goal! Let’s keep up the great work San Diego!
Top of my playlist: A little while ago, I highlighted Zach Bryan as an artist I was really into. If you liked him, then definitely check out Whiskey Myers or Tyler Childers. I dream of the day all three play a show together!
What I’m reading: The horrific Tiger Woods car crash reminded me of the book “Tiger Woods” by Jeff Benedict and Armen Keteyian that had been recommended to me. It had been languishing at the bottom of the stack in my Kindle. I bumped it up and found a fascinating read. The book gives a piercing insight into his life and career. It’s worth a read.
Padres: Our Padres have struggled a bit as of late, but we’re still in the first inning of the season. Last night we had a great win over the Dodgers and got to witness one of the greatest double plays ever! I am now officially a convert. I accept the runner on second base in extra innings and now firmly believe MLB needs to get rid of the shift. We need our game back. BTW—I still don’t like the designated hitter.
