Dis-information is killing people: Stephen Colbert found the speakers at our Tuesday board meeting funny. And while he is a funny guy, the reality is that the rampant dis-information campaign around public health is killing people. While the most vile comments were directed at me and our public health officer, I am not going to back down to bullying, intimidation or threats. Trust science, your doctor and get a damn vaccine!
Recall: On Saturday, we stood with Gavin Newson in San Diego--united against the recall. You should have received your ballot in the mail already. Please, please, please--take it out, vote NO on the recall and send it back! If not, you could end up with this guy as Governor (opposes any minimum wage, prompts anti-vax conspiracy theories, doesn’t believe in climate change, etc). So the future of our state depends on you taking 5 minutes to fill out and mail back your ballot:) Just do it!
Mental Health: Paige Hilkan passed away four months after giving birth to her 5th child by way of suicide after a struggle with anxiety induce insomnia and depression. Her and her husband's willingness to discuss their struggles and tragic outcome is heartbreaking but essential. We must treat mental health like we do any other illness and remove the stigma. H/T to Kevin Acee (outstanding UT writer covering the Padres) for sharing.
Afghanistan: The situation in Afghanistan is really hard to watch. I’ve spent a lot of the last week talking to fellow combat and all (even the most conservative) agree that we had to leave and agree it was all going to fall apart when we did. But we should have prepared better to help our friends and allies get out. I only hope future generations remember how easy it is to get into wars, but how incredibly hard. And the toll these failures take on those who served.
Healthy and Strong: My wife’s cancer diagnosis is not slowing her down at all! Last weekend, we enjoyed starting our morning running the AFC 5K! Of course, her tweet about what she took away from the race is priceless!
