Disinformation is a public health crisis: 98% of our COVID hospitalizations are of the unvaccinated. Another anti-vax, anti-mask leader is fighting for his life...from COVID. And the CDC had to issue official guidance encouraging humans to not take horse deworming medicine. This isn’t an ideological difference of values, this is people dying because they are believing things that simply aren’t so.
Shake, shake, shake (Alert): This week we unveiled a new app--one that can give you a 4 to 7 second advance warning of an earthquake. The scientists who designed it are very smart and while I don’t really understand how it works, I trust them. And it is packed with helpful emergency preparedness and response info. Go to the app store, search “SD Emergency” and download!
Chess is cool: This week, my outdoor chess tables will be installed at the County’s Waterfront Park (yes, I really did announce this effort in my state of the county address). And we are celebrating this wonderful accomplishment next weekend off with our 1st Annual Supervisor Fletcher Youth Chess Tournament! There are a few spots left!
Quote I am pondering: I have a lot of complicated and unsettled thoughts about the recent weeks in Afghanistan--shaped by my multiple combat deployments and now having a son on active duty in the Marine Corps. I’ll sort it all out someday but for now let's honor those Marines who gave their lives trying to fulfill our commitment to protect our friends and allies. Shakespeare summed it up, “cowards die many times before their deaths; the valiant never taste death but once.”
At the end of the day: No matter the strains or stresses of a day, my “baby” can always find the perfect way to make it all ok. I love this kid.
