Here are five things that caught my attention!
Housing, housing, housing: We had a breakthrough on local housing development this week. My colleagues and I on the Board passed a compromise measure that paves the way for more housing to be built in the parts of our county that are ready for growth while also aligning ourselves with state environmental laws. Nobody got everything they wanted, but we took a big step towards greenlighting the development of more than 4,000 new units of housing in the unincorporated area (compare that to the less than 600 units constructed annually before I arrived), allowing affordable housing to go up anywhere in the county without mitigation costs, and stayed true to our environmental commitments. We are far from done in this area, but this was a big week for San Diego County. Read more about it here. Oh yeah, we also opened the doors on an affordable housing project – space to help 500 folks get off the streets!
If you need a good smile today: A couple put a microphone on their 4 year old who wanted to snowboard in his favorite dinosaur costume. Just go with me here–the joy this video will bring you is well worth the 55 seconds to watch it:)
Opportunity Zones: We should all support efforts to get capital -- into distressed communities to provide more opportunity. But when people try to do it through the tax code, it rarely seems to work out. It appears that a capital gains tax break, passed as part of the 2017 Trump tax cuts and designed to encourage private investment into impoverished communities, is being used to support energy-intensive crypto mining operations in rural America. It’s not creating jobs and yields approximately zero economic benefit to the local community, but it is making cryptocurrency investors rich. These ideas may start with good intentions but seem to end up helping wealthy folks at the expense of the working class and costing us all.
Underwater wonderland: I find great peace underwater exploring the ocean. The quiet and calm of a good dive make for magical moments as a guest. Thank you Catalina—you didn’t disappoint. And yes, KUSI “news” really did a story criticizing me for taking ¾ of a Sunday to go scuba diving. 🤷🏻♂️
Quote of the week: Proverbs 29:11“Fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end” (NIV).
