Here are five things that caught my attention!
Happy Lunar New Year: We started January 1st thinking 2022 would be better–then it got off to a rough start for us. So we adopted Lunar New Year for a fresh start. I joined some dear friends from the Vietnamese community to unveil a beautiful mural in City Heights and talked about the need for a time of renewal, love and hope. May this year bring us all renewed hope, courage, and strength.
Jamie Raskin: Hat tip to my wife for sharing this article about Jaime Raskin from Vogue. This constitutional law professor, turned Member of Congress, has endured more than seems imaginable. He endured the soul crushing loss of a son to suicide, and then, the day he returns to work at the Capitol we have an insurrection. After all of that, he led the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump and has emerged as a national leader. He handles it all with grace, dignity, and an unrelenting drive for justice. I haven’t read his new book, but plan to get it in the queue. This profile on him is definitely worth a read.
Goodnight Moon: The time spent reading to my kids is some of my most cherished memories. Goodnight Moon was a staple for them all (along with Brown Bear and of course The Little Engine That Could). I knew the name of the author for Goodnight Moon was Margaret Wise Brown, but honestly didn’t know a thing about her. That all changed with this New Yorker piece. Wow, what a character! Mystical and mercurial seems to sum it up!
Deeper dive–States’ Mortality: What difference does it make what part of the country you live in? Apparently, it makes a big difference -- like, life-death type difference. An alarming study finds that mortality and life expectancy differences between states started to emerge in 1980, and the differences are widening. Even before COVID, the study shows California has done relatively well keeping its citizens alive, where states like Ohio haven’t done as well. Obviously, there are big policy differences between states, and it turns out that states that accepted Medicaid expansion under Obamacare, have higher tobacco taxes, and have generally taken more steps to protect the health of their residents have seen better health outcomes and longer lives. Imagine that. More on this study in this podcast.
Photo of the Week: A team of deep-sea divers found a ‘pristine’ coral reef while mapping the ocean floor off the coast of Tahiti. It’s said to resemble a bed of roses that stretches 3 kilometers wide. Researchers say it is a glimpse of what parts of the ocean would look like without climate change (the deeper you go, the less impacted by climate change).
