Pandemic of the unvaccinated: We are seeing a surge in COVID cases and almost all of them are of the unvaccianted (99% of hosplitzations/deaths). If we want to slow the spread, we need people to get a vaccine. If you have a family member or friend who is hesitant, please share this powerful (and tragic) story with them. It might help.
Crossfit comeback?: For years, I was deep in the cult known as crossfit. I got ripped, found a community and even organized a large national crossfit event to benefit our veterans. Then the founder of crossfit showed himself as a racist with a business culture full of sexism. That, plus a slow recovery from back surgery (my 15th arthroscopic procedure), COVID and a busy life got me out of the habit. A new ownership team and CEO are planning a revival. I might be here for it.
Ready to respond: The dangers of wildfire have never been greater. We saw the most destructive wildfires in California history in 2020 and while we have not had severe fires to that extent in San Diego, we work daily to be prepared. I joined regional fire leaders to share some of our actions. But go to www.ReadySanDiego.org to do your part!
Summer reading: Next week, I will share my full summer reading list but I just finished book one on my list--Ministry of the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson. Wow-this fiction account of the impact of climate change just a few decades in the future will leave you shaken. Extreme heat, rising sea levels, economic lessons, and a great plot all wrapped up in 600 pages of a great read!
Shoutout: My beautiful wife and I (plus kids) are enjoying (or trying to enjoy) a little time off in the mountains. Beautiful hikes, line dancing at the local saloon (no one here knows us), and Lorena tackling some technical mountain biking are on the agenda. She is fearless and doesn’t let losing some serious skin slow her down:)
