Gimme Shelter: This week, we started construction on a new shelter that can house up to 200 homeless in the Midway area of San Diego. The goal is to get them off the streets, connected with mental health services, and transitioned to permanent housing– opening a spot for someone else to follow the same process. This effort is important but just one part of a robust investment in tackling homelessness. We have provided $10 million dollars in grants to cities to expand shelters, voted unanimously to support Governor Newsom’s CARE Court proposal, and continue to tackle addiction.
Zach Bryan: I'm guessing for a great number of you the first time you heard of singer Zach Bryan was right here in Fletcher Friday Five! Now the whole world is watching this US Navy veteran/songwriter blow up the charts! #1 on country and #5 world wide across all genres on Billboard. His ambitious 34 track album American Heartbreak is outstanding. Check it out! Little peak at one of my favorite songs from his new stuff here.
AG: This week, I had the privilege of giving my friend, and California Attorney General, Rob Bonta, a tour of one of our Mobile Crisis Response Team’s (MCRT) facilities where mental help professionals receive calls and are dispatched to help San Diegans in need. The establishment of these units frees up law enforcement to respond to cases that are a better fit for their training. As our state’s top law enforcement officer, AG Bonta had a great understanding of the value of San Diego County’s MCRT. We were proud to host him and chat with him about a model that is working.
The Future of Baseball?: Okay, so I know I’m a little erratic on hot takes on baseball. I hate the designated hitter, love the automatic strike zone and wish they would align second base in the right place. And I find the Savannah Bananas very entertaining. Just watch the video. It is just fun. 9 innings in 99 minutes, points awarded for innings won, lots of dancing, no breaks for batters to leave the batter's box, no mound visits -- the list goes on. Kudos to them for pushing the envelope and trying some interesting things. It is not the future of baseball, but can make the game fun. Check it out and decide for yourself!
Tweet of the Week: This week we said goodbye to Ray Liotta. He is probably best known for his tough guy role in Goodfellas, but let us never forget the incredible performance as Shoeless Joe Jackson in Field of Dreams.
