Here are five things that caught my attention!
Only America: This week, 18 parents have to plan funerals for their children, plus the two teachers murdered. We can chalk up another death as the heartbroken husband of a teacher killed, died of a heart attack the day after this tragedy. We can ask ourselves rhetorically why this keeps happening, but we know exactly why. It’s not mental illness, and it is not video games. It’s guns, And we know what will work–adopting common-sense gun safety legislation nationally. Sadly in the U.S. Senate Republicans have consistently blocked even the most sensible gun reforms. The Poet Amanda Gorman said it best: “It takes a monster to kill children. But to watch monsters kill children again and again and do nothing isn’t just insanity—it’s inhumanity.” Let's take steps that we will know can work: ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
Boom Bust: You garage sale enthusiasts know that one person’s trash is another treasure. If you’ve ever had to clean out your house before a big move or had to furnish a college dorm on a budget, you know that your local Goodwill site is also a great place to find treasure. But you probably never walked into a Goodwill expecting to find priceless ancient Greek artifacts -- and yet, that’s exactly what happened to one shopper in Austin, TX. She paid $34.99 for an actual Roman bust from the late 1st century B.C. or early 1st century A.D., which had been part of a Bavarian king’s art collection from the 19th century.
Tip of the cap: Zander Moricz gave one of the most creative and moving graduation speeches in history! The first openly gay class president of his Floriday High School was told if he said the word “gay” that they cut off his microphone. So he inserted “curly hair” for “gay”. The end result was more powerful and got way more attention. I hope every legislator in Florida who supports their ridiculous efforts watches and realizes they got completely clowned by a high school senior.
Know the difference: A very friendly reminder that Monday is Memorial Day–the day we honor those who died in combat. Veterans Day in November is the day we honor all who served. The difference is really important. Memorial Day is my least favorite day of the year with a range of really complicated emotions. I tried as best I could to outline my thoughts on the day a couple of years ago in this column.
Something lighter: Baseball is good. Kids are better. The two together are the best. Check out this video of the greatest walk-up song in baseball history!
