There is a difference: This weekend we will commemorate Memorial Day (the last Monday in May). November 11th is Veterans Day. They are very different and the difference is very important to those of us who served. I struggle with tremendous conflict and heartbreak on Memorial Day (plus other days) and wrote about it recently.
Southside of Heaven: Someone who read a previous Fletcher Friday 5 email where I said how much Lorena and I are enjoying Yellowstone, replied to tell me their favorite character is “Walker,” an actor who plays a singing cowboy. He is great, but they actually found an established singer (not super well known) and convinced him to be an actor! Check out Ryan Bingham here. And BTW--Rip is my favorite character!
Roaring back: No, I am not talking about John Cox's ridiculous exploitation of a bear, I am talking about economic recovery. California is poised to truly roar back. This piece from the Economist gives some good context on what a recovery might entail and, surprisingly, what it might not mean. Worth a read.
Stolen Base: I like baseball that isn’t all strikeouts and home runs. Our Padres are the best team in baseball (for the moment), but I really love the game they are playing. Leading the league in steals (by a lot), playing aggressive, good defense, and of course the Cronenworth “Little League” homerun. I’m here for more of this and hope that the MLB will consider this change to bring back stolen base attempts.
Honor to serve: This week as the Board of Supervisors, we announced a major addition to our mental health and drug treatment services, we are starting to take a hard look at our regional fire preparedness, we launched a bi-national vaccine program, we wrapped up a comprehensive approach to developing our river park, and we had two great days of budget hearings. It is truly an honor to serve. Thank you.
