A new day: For all the initial uncertainty with the national elections, in San Diego the voters sent a clear message! The Democratic Party won a majority on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors! There will be a lot of changes coming to our county government and I had the chance to highlight a few of them here. It is clear that Nora Vargas and Terra Lawson-Remer will be joining me at the County and I am excited to work with both of them. More to come!
Happy Birthday ISS: On Tuesday night, I felt like I was living on another planet (came back to Earth a bit in subsequent days), but for more than two decades the International Space Station has been there for you to escape Earth! What was initially decried as a boondoggle has been an amazing success story. This NY Times piece is a great walk through (with incredible pictures) of the history of the ISS. And congrats to ISS alum Mark Kelly—our new Senator from the great state of Arizona! He joins former Senator/Astronauts John Glenn and Jack Schmitt. A rare club!
Good Resource: I spend a fair amount of time consuming news with a mix of local, state, national and international sources. This week, I wanted to highlight a great resource to stay current with news across the state of California—Rough and Tumble. For decades, Jack Kavanagh has been compiling daily links to the most important stories of California government and politics. Check it out!
COVID-19: Cases are rising across the country and sadly San Diego County is no exception. While our numbers are not as stark as some others, we are seeing increases in cases, hospitalizations, percentage of positive and our health equity metric. This will almost certainly put us back into the higher tier this coming week and with that reinstating some previous restrictions on indoor operations. It is critical as a region we slow the spread, get our cases down and set a solid foundation for next year. THIS IS DOABLE. Australia has virtually eliminated COVID! Please take a moment to read about their approach. I highlighted an important section that was key to their success. They didn’t make up conspiracy theories, fight masks, etc. They did use doughnuts:)
Photo of the week: AP photographer Evan Vucci captured the photo of the decade!
