San Diego County Workers Endorse Nathan Fletcher for Supervisor
Influential union, SEIU 221, unanimously backs Fletcher
SAN DIEGO – SEIU 221, the union representing San Diego County workers, has endorsed Nathan Fletcher for County Supervisor. The move by the 15,000 member union is a major early development in the race and adds to Fletcher’s growing support within San Diego’s powerful and influential labor movement.
David Garcias, President of SEIU 221 said: “Nathan Fletcher has stood shoulder to shoulder with County workers as we’ve fought to raise the minimum wage, strengthen protections for San Diego’s most vulnerable and bring progressive change to County Government. We’re going to work hard to elect Nathan Fletcher to bring a fresh perspective to the County Board of Supervisors and deliver real results that make a difference in the lives of working people.”
The SEIU endorsement comes just days after Fletcher kicked off his campaign and landed endorsements from Democratic City Councilman Chris Ward and former Democratic Party Chairs Francine Busby and Jess Durfee. This week, Fletcher also earned a unanimous vote of support from San Diego’s Building and Construction Trades Council further cementing his backing within San Diego’s progressive Labor Movement.
Nathan Fletcher said: “I am proud to be the choice of working people for County Supervisor and honored to earn the support of the hardworking County employees who provide vital services for our community. I look forward to working with SEIU to strengthen economic security for families struggling to make ends meet, tackle the homeless crisis and invest in safer, stronger neighborhoods in every part of San Diego.”
Service Employees Union 221 represents over 10,000 San Diego County employees including Librarians, Social Workers, and 911 dispatchers. Since 2015, SEIU has led the Invest In San Diego Families campaign, a community coalition challenging County Government to invest in people, services and communities to stimulate the economy and create a more equitable San Diego. Community partners from Invest in San Diego Families participated in SEIU 221’s endorsement process. The union’s executive board ratified Fletcher’s endorsement unanimously.
Nathan Fletcher is a Marine Corps combat veteran, former California State Assemblymember and a Professor of Practice at UCSD. In the State Assembly, Fletcher passed more than 30 laws to expand healthcare coverage, protect homeowners during the foreclosure crisis and strengthen penalties for violent crimes against children. Since leaving the Assembly, Fletcher founded a veterans’ advocacy foundation to help eliminate the stigma surrounding Post-Traumatic Stress and joined the teaching faculty at UCSD. Fletcher lives in City Heights with his wife, Lorena, and their four children.
