United Domestic Workers Backs Nathan Fletcher For 4th District Supervisor
SAN DIEGO – The union representing San Diego’s 23,000 caregivers, who provide in-home health care to infirm, elderly and disabled County residents, is backing Nathan Fletcher for County Supervisor.
Doug Moore, President of United Domestic Workers (UDW), said: "UDW is a union made up of nearly 23,000 in-home care providers living and working in San Diego County. Our union stands for social and economic justice in our communities. This means fighting for accessible home care, healthcare, housing, and transit for San Diego County residents. It means being a strong and vocal advocate for those who need a voice most – including the 27,000 in-home care clients we serve. And it means supporting the leaders who will stand up for caregivers, seniors, people with disabilities and our communities. That’s why we are endorsing Nathan Fletcher for the San Diego County Board of Supervisors.”
United Domestic Workers (UDW) is the largest union in San Diego and one of the state’s strongest advocacy groups for quality healthcare for seniors, the sick and Californians with disabilities. UDW in-home caregivers deliver healthcare to thousands of San Diegans through the state’s In-Home Supportive Services program, which is overseen locally by the County Board of Supervisors. Fletcher has previously stood with UDW to call for increased funding for the County’s vital safety net programs for San Diego’s underserved and vulnerable populations.
Nathan Fletcher responded: “I have seen first-hand the sacrifices and struggles San Diego’s Domestic Workers make to care for our community’s sick and elderly. At a time when the Federal Government is threatening to make alarming cuts to crucial healthcare programs, I’ll fight to expand County Government’s protections for our most vulnerable communities and work to provide our hardworking caregivers with the all the support they need.”
Nathan Fletcher is the Democratic Party’s endorsed candidate for County Supervisor. With today’s endorsement, Fletcher is now backed by the two largest unions representing County employees, UDW and SEIU, and is only Democratic candidate for Supervisor with labor support.
Nathan Fletcher is a Marine Corps combat veteran, former California State Assemblymember and a Professor of Practice at UCSD. In the State Assembly, Fletcher passed more than 30 laws to expand healthcare coverage, protect homeowners during the foreclosure crisis and strengthen penalties for violent crimes against children. Since leaving the Assembly, Fletcher founded a veterans’ advocacy foundation to help eliminate the stigma surrounding Post-Traumatic Stress and joined the teaching faculty at UCSD. Fletcher lives in City Heights with his wife, Lorena, and their four children.
