These are the values that have always guided Nathan Fletcher and his unwavering commitment to making a real difference in people’s lives.** From serving in the United States Marine Corps to leading the fight to bring unjustly deported veterans home. From passing Chelsea’s Law to pioneering a new, progressive direction for San Diego County,  Nathan Fletcher has stepped up to get things done and deliver for his constituents.

Nathan Fletcher grew up working class, raised in a community hit hard by the erosion of our manufacturing base, and knows the struggles of families trying to make ends meet. Nathan has never forgotten where he comes from, who he is, or who he’s fighting for.

Before public office, Nathan served in the Marine Corps with combat tours in Iraq, the Near East, and the Horn of Africa. He was decorated for valor under enemy fire and has been an advocate for military veterans ever since founding a veterans foundation to help those struggling with PTSD and successfully overturning unjust deportations of immigrant servicemembers. While leading San Diego County, Nathan’s efforts helped over 650 homeless veterans find housing and he launched an aggressive veterans hiring initiative. He is leading the effort to end veteran homelessness in San Diego County.

As a State Assemblyman, Nathan was one of California’s most effective legislators, passing over 30 laws to expand healthcare coverage, protect homeowners from foreclosure, and make college more affordable. And Nathan authored Chelsea’s Law, landmark public safety legislation that strengthened penalties for the most violent crimes against children.

In 2018, Nathan was elected to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. As the only Democratic official on a board dominated by Republicans, some said Nathan wouldn’t get anything done. But he proved them wrong by passing over 100 substantive policy changes in his first term on climate action, union jobs, immigrant rights, affordable housing, support for at-risk children, and more.

Two years later, as the County’s first Democratic Chair in generations, Nathan fundamentally transformed the County into *the* progressive powerhouse driving change in the San Diego region.

**Under Nathan Fletcher’s leadership, San Diego had the one of the most effective COVID responses in the nation.** Fletcher’s all-out fight to protect San Diego during the pandemic saved lives.

As San Diego County Chair, Nathan also led the effort to create the County’s innovative, new Mobile Crisis Response Teams to tackle homelessness emergencies. Now, nurses and clinicians – not only police – are responding to mental health crisis calls and blazing the path towards progress on California’s raging homelessness crisis.

Nathan also serves as Chair of the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System, is a member of the Governor’s Council of Regional Homelessness Advisors and continues to teach part-time as a Professor of Practice at UC San Diego with courses on California government and civil rights.

Nathan is an avid outdoorsman and Ironman triathlete who enjoys mountain biking, mountain/glacier climbing and boxing. He lives in the City Heights community of San Diego with his wife Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher and their five children.

__About Nathan Fletcher__

Nathan Fletcher is the first Democrat to serve as Chair of the County Board of Supervisors in decades, and is known as one of San Diego’s most effective leaders.  Fletcher led San Diego’s COVID response – one of the most effective in the nation – and pioneered the region’s new Mobile Crisis Response Teams to better meet the needs of homeless San Diegans experiencing mental health crises.  Fletcher previously served from 2008 to 2012 in the State Assembly, where he authored Chelsea’s Law, landmark public safety legislation to protect children from sexually violent crimes. Fletcher is also a United States Marine Corps veteran. ** \n **

Nathan Fletcher’s proven record and landmark accomplishments also include:

* Increasing county behavioral health services by 70%, which fundamentally reshaped San Diego County’s approach to mental health and addiction services;

* Passing more than 130 policies over his first term, more than 90% of which received bipartisan support;

* Championing community choice energy programs and stronger regional Climate Action Plans that help move consumers away from fossil fuels.

 

Senate District 39 is being vacated by Pro Tem Toni Atkins because of term limits and consists of nearly half of registered voters in the City of San Diego, including the Point Loma peninsula, downtown, mid-city, Southeast, City Heights, and parts of Clairemont; the entirety of the cities of Lemon Grove, La Mesa, El Cajon, and Coronado; and unincorporated parts of San Diego County.  SD 39 boasts a 24-point Democratic registration advantage over Republicans (46-22%).
