NATHAN FLETCHER--Fighting for Women’s Rights

The Republican Party controls the San Diego County Board of Supervisors—all five seats. And they will stop at nothing to keep their hold on power and elect Republican Bonnie Dumanis. This includes their all too transparent efforts to fund attacks against Nathan Fletcher with Democratic voters and promote Democratic candidates they think they can beat.

However, Democrats are not falling for their deception. That is why the Democratic Party of San Diego voted overwhelmingly to endorse Nathan Fletcher. This is on top of support from leaders like Governor Jerry Brown, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, Assemblymember Todd Gloria and Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, Councilmember Chris Ward, Barbara Bry and Georgette Gomez, Senator Chris Kehoe, former Councilmembers Donna Frye and Marti Emerald and many others who have all stepped forward to support Nathan Fletcher—the official Democratic Party candidate for Board of Supervisors. They join the Sierra Club, League of Conservation Voters, and the San Diego and Imperial County Labor Council in standing with Nathan Fletcher.

Nathan has always been a supporter of a woman’s right to choose. He was part of Republicans for Choice PAC and was on the record going back more than a decade to being very clearly pro-choice. He has always been supportive of abortion rights. For candidate endorsements and ratings, click here.

FACT: NATHAN FLETCHER HAS ALWAYS SUPPORTED A WOMAN’S RIGHT TO CHOSE

“I am and always have been pro-choice.  Women have a constitutionally protected right to make personal decisions regarding their health including whether or not to have an abortion.   It is a shame people are playing politics with such an important issue, but my position is clear. I am pro-choice."

2012 Mayoral Election Rated 100% Pro-Choice

“We are especially appreciative of your personal commitment to women's reproductive rights and healthcare services.”

-Vince Hall, Former Vice President, Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest*

“I've known Nathan for years.  He has always been pro-choice and has always been willing to listen and learn about issues on women's health.

-Karen Brailean, Democrat

“I knew Nathan before he ever ran for office and hosted his first fundraiser for the Assembly.  One of my criteria for supporting Nathan, as someone long involved in women's issues, was that he is pro-choice.  Nathan was pro-choice then and has remained so, and women everywhere respect his commitment to their right to choose.”

-Julie Meier Wright, Republican *

FACT: Nathan routinely voted to expand women’s health care coverage.

In addition to his 100 percent voting score from Planned Parenthood, Nathan supported countless other bills during his tenure in the California State Assembly that moved the needle forward for progressive maternal health care. Nathan voted AYE on the following bills:

  • Requiring Inclusion of Maternity Services in Health Coverage which specifies that maternity services include Prenatal care, Ambulatory care maternity services, Involuntary complications of pregnancy, Neonatal care, and
Inpatient hospital maternity care, including labor, delivery and postpartum care.

  • Pregnancy or Childbirth Leave for Employees that establishes reasonable leave time for pregnant employees or those who recently gave birth. This successful bill establishes that employers must allow a female employee to take a leave for pregnancy, childbirth, or a related medical condition and prohibits an employer from refusing to maintain and pay for health care coverage for an employee who takes authorized pregnancy or childbirth leave up to 4 months. It also prohibits an employer from refusing to temporarily transfer a pregnant female employee to a less strenuous or hazardous position for the duration of her pregnancy, if requested by the employee and is within reasonable limits of accommodation.
  • Expands Cash Assistance Programs for Pregnant Teenagers which expanded the CalWORKS aid to qualified pregnant mothers who are 18 years of age or younger.
